How to Empower Students to be Active Citizens

As a civics teacher, one of your goals is to teach students about the duties and responsibilities of citizens. This is a critical aspect of civic education that helps students become informed and engaged members of their communities. One way to make this topic engaging and interactive is by incorporating a gallery walk activity into your lesson plan.

A gallery walk is an activity in which students rotate through different stations, observing and analyzing a variety of images or artifacts related to a particular topic. In this gallery walk, the topic would be the duties and responsibilities of citizens. Students can complete the activity independently or in small groups, and they spend several minutes at each station recording observations and making inferences about the images.

To set up the activity, you will need to create eight posters that depict different aspects of civic duties and responsibilities. For example, one poster could show a group of people participating in a community clean-up event, while another poster could depict a group of citizens attending a city council meeting. I include a QR code on each poster that students can scan with their smartphones or tablets to learn more about the context of each source.

You will also need to create a recording sheet for students to use as they move through the different stations. The recording sheet should include questions that prompt students to analyze and interpret each image. For example, you could ask students to identify the main idea of each image, describe the actions of the people depicted, and explain how the image relates to the concept of civic duty and responsibility.

At the end of the activity, I ask my students to answer an evidence-based question that ties together the themes and ideas explored in the gallery walk. For example, you could ask students to explain how citizen participation in local government can impact their community.
