DIGITAL Hexagonal Thinking Activities for Middle School and High School Students!

As educators, we are constantly on the lookout for engaging activities that promote critical thinking and deeper understanding among our students. One such activity that has gained popularity in recent years is hexagonal thinking. Hexagonal thinking activities provide students with a visual framework to organize their thoughts and foster connections between different ideas. In this blog post, I will share some of the benefits of using digital hexagonal thinking activities in the middle and high school Social Studies classroom.

1. Challenging and Engaging:
Hexagonal thinking activities present a unique challenge to students, similar to solving a puzzle. Any challenge sparks interest and motivates most students to actively participate. By engaging in these activities, students not only enjoy the process but also develop critical thinking skills as they strive to make meaningful connections between concepts and themes.

2. Deepens Understanding:
The visual nature of hexagonal thinking prompts students to organize content into categories and establish relationships between various ideas. This process encourages deep thinking and helps students develop a more comprehensive understanding of the topic at hand.

3. Versatility in Classroom Applications:
One of the great advantages of digital hexagonal thinking activities in particular is their flexibility in implementation. Whether used as bell-ringers, exit tickets, or quick "check for understanding" activities, digital hexagonal thinking cards offer many possibilities for enhancing student learning.

4. Integration of Technology:
In today's digital age, integrating technology into the classroom has become essential. Digital hexagonal thinking activities provide a perfect opportunity to leverage technology for instructional purposes. By utilizing digital platforms and tools, such as Google Slides or interactive whiteboards, educators can enhance student engagement and facilitate collaboration.

5. Blended Learning Benefits:
With the increasing prevalence of blended learning environments, where face-to-face and virtual students are taught simultaneously, digital hexagonal thinking activities prove invaluable. Teachers can easily incorporate these activities into both in-person and online lessons, ensuring that all students have equal access to the benefits of hexagonal thinking.
