March on Washington

The program for March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom held on August 28, 1963. Initiated by A. Philip Randolph, president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the march became a joint project with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The principal organizer of the March was Bayard Rustin, who read the demands of the March, "to the achievement of social peace through social justice."Bayard Rustin on cover of LIFE, after the March.
